Downtown & Main Street

Downtown Las Cruces was remade in the 1960s and again since: Main Street is open to cars once more, the farmers’ market fills the mall twice a week, and the city’s museums sit within a few blocks.

Discover Downtown & Main Street

In the 1960s an urban-renewal project tore down a large part of the original downtown, including St. Genevieve’s Catholic Church of 1859, to make a pedestrian mall. A six-block stretch of Main Street was closed to traffic in 1973, and a 2005 master plan brought two-way traffic back to the street in 2012. (Wikipedia)

The downtown mall holds a large farmers’ market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, with stands run by local farmers, artists and craftspeople. The area also has museums, restaurants, churches, galleries and theaters. (Wikipedia)

Since 2014 a 19-foot New Mexico chile lit with 400 feet of LEDs has come down from a crane at the Plaza de Las Cruces on New Year’s Eve, to live music, a piñata and carnival games. USA Today ranked the Chile Drop third among the best New Year’s Eve drops in 2023. (Wikipedia)
