A bosque is a riverside forest. The Mesilla Valley’s few remaining bosques are marked by native cottonwoods and, increasingly, by invasive tamarisk, known locally as salt cedar. Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park preserves about 305 acres of river woodland and restored wetlands near Las Cruces; it is day-use only and popular for birdwatching.
